While there are plenty of great Christmas markets here in the UK, if you’ve been thinking about travelling a bit further afield and making a little mini break of your trip this winter, may we suggest a trip to a little place that’s home to what’s been dubbed ‘one of the best Christmas markets in the world’?

You might have heard of Strasbourg’s famous Christmas market but its sister town, Colmar, is often hailed the ‘Disneyland of all Christmas markets in the world’… and there’s currently flights there for under £40 on Skyscanner.

With a picturesque fairytale-style setting and six spectacular Christmas markets to choose from, it’s a pretty good way to truly get into the festive spirit this winter.

From taking a stroll around the stalls and wooden chalets, to picking up some unique handmade gifts and presents to bring home with you, given the price of train tickets here in the UK, you’d actually be cheaper making a holiday of it via budget flights than you would taking the train up to the Edinburgh Christmas markets.

Just imagine warming yourself up with a hot drink and all the brilliant photo opportunities. I mean, just look at the photos.

And those who have made the festive trip before were quick to share just how ‘breathtaking’ and ‘beautiful’ it was all lit up for Christmas.

Plus, it’s always nice to get a little break before the hectic weeks and days leading up to December 25. And a little weekday trip away could be the perfect solution.

How to visit the ‘Disneyland of Christmas markets’ for under £40

We found flights from as little as £38 return, or £47 after the Christmas markets open on November 26 – but you should be able to play around with dates, depending on when you want to fly.

For the cheapest trip, you’d be flying from London Gatwick to Basel (the nearest airport to Colmar) at 6:05pm on Tuesday December 3, with you arriving at 8:40pm. But you’ll essentially still have a full day as the return flight doesn’t depart Basel until 6:20pm the following day, Wednesday December 4. However, if you’re happy to spend a little more you can snag a Saturday-Sunday trip for £47.

Thankfully, it’s only around a 45 minute train journey from the airport to take you right into the heart of Colmar’s historic town centre.

On the way home the return does get into London Stansted, but doing so will save you quite a bit of money, as opposed to returning via Gatwick.

It is also worth mentioning that the Colmar Christmas markets open officially from November 26 to December 29, so you’ll want to coincide your visit with these dates to ensure that it’s all set up and running.

Or, alternatively, if you’re hoping to explore the town when it’s a bit quieter, you might want to aim for early November, as we have a feeling it will still be an incredible sight to see even before they fully get into the festivities.

Whichever day or week you choose, we have a feeling you’ll be blown away by the charming French town.

Those looking for some winter sun can find some incredible value out there

Sick of the grim weather? Well, for less than £15, you can jet off on a Ryanair flight to the ‘Kingdom of the West’ with attractions like the world’s largest film studio and an 11th century village that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For those looking to turn their back on the rainy days and darker evenings, there is the ‘Garden of Europe’ where you can fly to for as little as £14.99 and enjoy €2 beers in 23C sunshine.

There’s also the ‘Hawaii of Europe’ and the ‘Greek Caribbean’ where pints are a few quid a go. Sounds quite tempting even to the biggest fans of the Halloween and Christmas seasons.

But if you want something outside of Europe, Ryanair has you covered with the Irish airline also running flights outside of the continent.

One of it’s most exciting destinations is a country that gets round the clock sunshine with highs of around 20 degrees celsius from November to March.

And if you fly to one particular part of the country, you might recognise the landscape from some of your favourite films, with a studio that has helped make the likes of Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Star Wars situated there.

We’re talking about Morocco, where you can fly to from the tiny price of £14.99 each way.

With current flight to Agadir, Tangier, and Ouarzazate you can travel from the UK to any of these cities for the low price.

Agadir is popular with Brits given it is a seaside city, with many resorts dotted along the coastline. It’s also famous for its golf courses and restaurant scene which is full of local cuisine.

Tangier is rooted in history, with it acting as a longstanding gateway between Europe and Africa for thousands of years.

With culturally rich museums that display the history of the city, it is one for those who want to truly get immersed in local culture.

Forming part of the hippie trail going back to the 1960s and 1970s, the current King of Morocco has launched a campaign to restore its tourism past and rediscover the city’s true potential.

On the other hand, Ouarzazate is a mountain city that is known locally as the ‘door to the desert’ with it lying on the edge of the Sahara.

It is here that Atlas Film Studios is based; the largest studios on the planet when it comes to physical size alone, with the 322,000 square-feet site full of props and sets from the films that you can explore.

West of the city is the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village that has served as a key filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

It has been built upon since the 11th century with all current buildings dating back to the 17th century.

With temperatures getting colder day by day and snow starting to hit the UK in places, it’s hard not to daydream about a sunny escape.

Now, thanks to Ryanair’s ‘Cyber Week’ flash sale, you can jet off on a winter getaway for less than the price of a Five Guys burger.

The budget airline is currently offering 20 percent off flights to a selection of popular destinations taken between 1 December and 29 February.

Discounted flights during Ryanair's 'Cyber Week' flash sale cost as little as £9.99.

Flights from Liverpool to Barcelona cost as little as £19.99 while a quick trip across the Irish Sea to Dublin will set you back the oddly specific but very reasonable price of £15.43.

But, the best deal of the airline’s Black Friday offers could see you flying to a sunny hotspot in the north of Spain for less than a tenner.

One of the airline's best deals could see you jetting off to the Spanish beach resort tipped to be one of 2024's hottest.

Santender is a port city in the country’s autonomous community of Cantabria.

Flights to the Spanish city start at just £9.99 per way depending on the day you travel and, with temperatures averaging at 13 degrees Celcius across the winter months, it could provide the perfect respite to frostbite.

And, Seve Ballesteros–Santander Airport is just a 21-minute drive from the Spanish resort set to be huge in 2024.

Somo is said to be one of northern Spain’s ‘best-kept secrets’. The beach resort is frequented mostly by locals and is the perfect spot to relax away from the hordes of holidaymakers.

One of the main reasons people visit Somo is for its beach, which has been described by holidaymakers as ‘gorgeous.’

Manuel Alvarez

It also offers a range of watersports, including surfing, windsurfing and kayaking and is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants like El Serbal, Cenador de Amós, and Agua Salada, as well as plenty of others that won’t break the bank.

The city isn’t expensive to stay in either, with hotel rooms available from £40 per person per night.

Visitors to the resort clearly can’t enough, singing its praises on Tripadvisor. One review reads: “The beach is gorgeous with nice, fine, sand. It stretches for miles, so it wasn’t crowded.”

Another holidaymaker added: “A beautiful beach on the other side of Santander’s Bay, while a third wrote, “It has stunning views of Santander, and it’s perfect for a walk, swim, or surf.”

Tempted? We definitely are. But you better be quick as you only have until the end of the day (1 December) to swipe up the deal.
